Tips for Designing an Effective Brochure

Brochures are still an integral part of collateral marketing, despite the growing popularity of online advertising.  People still love a tangible product that they can hold in their hands.  I for one, although I love my tablet, prefer to read a physical copy of a book, rather than read it online.  So, a well-designed, informative brochure can still capture the attention of your potential customers.  Here are a few tips to make your product brochure a keeper:

-        Make it interesting!  That may sound like a no brainer, but considering the fact that the average attention span of an adult consumer in 2013 was only 8 seconds (compared with a goldfish at 9 seconds) you better make a good impression right from the start.  Know your audience and what they are looking for.  For example, if you sell skin care products or cosmetics, how about including tips from the pro’s on maintaining a good skin care regime? 

 

Entice your customers to get them to look inside.  Let them know there is something inside worth looking into, so use thought provoking questions or statements, maybe even include a “special offer” or invitation.

 

Make it an interesting shape.  Who says you have to go with the traditional tri-fold brochure.  Using your imagination when designing your brochure can produce above average results in your marketing efforts.  Experiment with different types of paper and shapes.  I have seen some rather fetching brochures that were die cut in interesting patterns.

 

Make it Relevant.  Let the customer know what you are all about, using content that is not only interesting, but informative.  Include images (remember a picture is worth a thousand words) and a call to action.

Because Benchmark Displays just finished a custom acrylic display for Yokahama tires, and because I had to go and get a new set of tires this weekend and Yokahama was displayed prominently throughout the business I was at,  I thought I would take a minute to congratulate them on their success…

 

Yokahama Tire Corporation has been in business here in the U.S since 1969 when the company, based out of Tokyo Japan opened an office in Los Angeles, California.  By 1986 they had outgrown their Montebello facility and made the move to Fullerton California.  Within two years they doubled the size of their Fullerton warehouse to 450,000 square-feet and in 1989 acquired the Mohawk Rubber Company, not only providing an important manufacturing facility in the U.S, but also by merging with Mohawk, they were able to produce automobile and light truck tires for sale in both the OEM and replacement markets in the U.S.  In 1992 they completed an 80 million dollar first phase expansion at the Salem Virginia Plant which produces 70 percent of the passenger tires Yokahama sells in the U.S.

It’s great to see what has been happening lately in the on-line world of e-commerce and the pop display market. Benchmark Displays, LLC has recently launched to new e-commerce web sites, TaymarPlasticDisplays.com and DisplaysDirect.net, featuring hundreds of stock displays for  retail merchandising. One site is retail and the other is exclusively for wholesale distributors.

I have visited both sites and must tell you, these guys have done a great job. They have incorporated several different ways to search for products. I can’t tell you how many times I have searched for a specific type of display and spent a long time trying to find it and virtually giving up.  With their new search features I found what I was looking for in less than a minute and a t a great price. And, right from landing on the site I could see where to begin my search, big and bold.

I really like searching by industry. Several industry types are listed and it is amazing the different types of products that are suggested for use. I bet if  you can’t find what you are looking for in your industry and let them know, they help you find it and may even add your industry to the search list.

Using brochure holders are a great idea as they offer the opportunity to show off your services to the customers you are advertising to, but still have them sitting up nice and neat. For those who are not interested, they can walk right by. No one has to hand them anything as the holder will carry the information and be available for those who want it.
